How did you come up with your business name?
I sat down with my husband and gave him my criteria for a name. A half an hour later he came up with Pitter Patterned and I loved it from the moment he suggested it!

When did you start Pitter Patterned?

In 2012 after getting married, but before having babies.

What inspired you to start Pitter Patterned?
The idea came to me when I designed the invitations for my wedding. I am a graphic designer and designed handkerchiefs with text on them as the invitations. It occurred to me that if I could print my own handkerchiefs that I could print anything on fabric. I have always loved sewing and quilting and found a way to combine my two loves in the form of quilts and blankets printed with graphics I designed.

What makes your business unique?
I think the blend of being modern and digital designs printed on fabric and made into a piece that is traditional in its origins is somewhat original.

What is your background?  How did you develop the skills needed for your business?
I have a Bachelors of Science in Graphic Communication from Cal Poly. I worked as a graphic designer for 7 years before starting my business. Those years helped me refine my design skills, approach customers the way I approached clients and to always be innovating and changing to keep things fresh.

What has been your biggest success so far in owning your own business?
I think my biggest success is each time someone finds my products for the first time (especially in an in-person setting) and they are just blown away at how different my products are and love them. It’s like people have been searching for a quilt or blanket like mine but didn’t know what they were looking for until they found it.

What has been your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge by far has been juggling being a stay at home mom of an almost 3-year-old and a 4-month-old. I would love to go full steam ahead with my business, but there just aren’t enough hours in the day.

Who or what inspires you and why?
I’ve always looked up to great graphic designers and entrepreneurs, but these days I’m even more inspired by mom-run businesses. The women who manage to get a significant amount of work done with little children in the house (with or without help) amaze me.

Describe your typical work day.
My typical work day is very fragmented. I work when everyone seems content which comes in quick 15 minute to half hour bursts throughout the day, and at nap time of course! I finish the day off with my only uninterrupted work time of the day, usually sending out proofs and wrapping up other loose ends from the day.

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to start their own creative business?
Do it before you have kids or after they go to school 🙂 But really, I’d say having a clear vision is key. I know it sounds cliché, but if your products or photos or art are all very different and don’t have a consistent look or feel to them it can be problematic and isn’t as enticing to consumers.

Now for some fun questions!
Favorite food?
Mexican, though I’m dairy free right now so it’s a struggle!
Favorite book?
The Valley of the Moon by Jack London. I’ve read and reread this book at various times in my life and there are pieces of it that I can relate to no matter where I’m at or what I’m going through. I imagine that will be true for the rest of my life. It’s not one of London’s better known books, but I adore it.
Favorite TV show or movie?
Modern Family! I haven’t been able to fit in a movie since my son was born 4 months ago so I watch Modern Family (sadly it sometimes takes two sittings), someday I’ll get to watch movies again.
Favorite hobbies?
I like to go hiking and spend time outdoors. Going on nature walks with my daughter is so fun, every little rock, leaf and bug are the most exciting thing she’s ever seen. We have to stop and look at something every 2 feet so it’s slow going, but so worth it.
Favorite part of the day?
Dream vacation?
I really want to travel to Patagonia, the rich colors, the mountains and the animals look so incredible.
Favorite local business?
I am in love with Spin Gifts in Roseville. They have such a great selection of gifts and hard to find items, it’s a great little store.
Favorite local restaurant?
What is guaranteed to make you smile?
My son and daughter are always guaranteed to make me smile 🙂
